Trader Joe's Just Released Ice Cream With 20g of Protein Per Pint
We've been counting down the days since Trader Joe's execs announced they were creating a high-protein, low-calorie ice cream—without all the nasty sugar alcohols—via their podcast back in March. Finally, five months later, the grocer has blessed us with Trader Joe's Light Ice Cream.
Trader Joes' Light Ice Cream currently comes in two amazing flavors—Chocolate Peanut Butter and Joe-Joe's Cookies & Cream—which are pretty good ones to start with. The Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor boasts only 370 calories for an entire pint and has 23g protein, while the Cookies & Cream flavor has 310 calories and 20g protein.
Unfortunately, our local TJ's hasn't stocked up the freezer section with either flavor, but luckily, Reddit is filling us in on the details. According to a Reddit thread titled "low calorie ice creams!!" this line of lighter ice cream is in fact free of sugar alcohols. One user listed the ingredients from a pint of Joe-Joe's Cookies & Cream, below:
Nonfat milk, cream, milk protein concentrate, inulin, dextrose, cane sugar, tapioca maltodextrine, chocolate flavored creme cookies, egg yolks, natural flavor, sea salt, carob bean gum, guar gum, steviol, monk fruit extract
While it's certainly not an all-natural product by any means, we do appreciate the grocer's dedication to using more natural sugar alternatives instead of chemical options. However, one blogger, DailyWaffle, noted stevia made the Cookies & Cream flavor a little too sweet for her liking and preferred the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor because of it. Plus, the latter has real chunks of peanut butter in it, which sounds totally dreamy—even for a low-calorie, high-protein option.
The cherry on top of all this exciting news is that a pint of Trader Joe's Light Ice Cream will only cost you $2.99—a dollar less than Halo Top and Enlightened, and even less than some of the other brands out there. We recommend stocking up on this product as soon as it graces your local Trader Joe's, because it's sure to sell out as soon as it arrives.
