When you think of eating as a British royal, you might imagine dinner at expensive restaurants or fine delicacies served on sparkling china—and you wouldn't be totally wrong. But, over the years, we've learned that the royal family enjoys a tightly controlled and simple diet that might not look so different from your own, especially when it comes to the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.
We were excited to learn more about what the royals were eating behind closed doors when Kensington Palace chef Carolyn Robb published a cookbook of some their favorite recipes in 2015. In an interview with Racked, the former chef revealed that Kate Middleton was the most likely to be found cooking in the kitchen.
"You have to remember that she’s not royal. She comes from a normal background and a normal home where she’s always cooked for herself," Robb told Racked. "And what I’ve always heard is that William enjoys spending time with her family because they just eat together at the kitchen table like a normal family. I’m sure that that’s what they still do."
People later reported on Prince William's favorite way to cook his steak (medium-rare, FYI), confirming that the couple and their children often enjoy meals cooked at home. The future King of England also joked that his wife keeps him "skinny" after Kate dished on her relatable approach to cooking in 2016.

Middleton's favorite dish to cook? Chicken.
One of Kate's favorite dishes to cook for her family is something you can (and probably have) made in your own kitchen—a classic roasted chicken. Vogue pieced together a few interviews where both Kate and her husband shared that a whole roasted chicken is a frequent dish enjoyed by the royal family. A 2012 profile in Vanity Fair shares that Kate makes the dish frequently when her family has a chance to sit down for dinner. And why wouldn't she? There are so many ways to roast chicken that the dish should be a staple for your family as much as it is for the duchess.
Curry is also frequently on the menu.
Another tried-and -true favorite for Middleton is traditional curry, according to Delish. On a state-sponsored visit to Canada in 2016, Kate admitted that she’s a big fan of the fragrant dish and often whips up easy-to-make curries in her own kitchen, the Mirror reports. Both William and Kate enjoyed multiple dishes while on their tour and even ventured to eat geoduck, a food that is reportedly not sanctioned outside of the palace walls.
She turns to a special diet when she’s pregnant.
Middleton had a rough pregnancy due to extreme morning sickness, which caused her to reject certain foods and even sent her to the hospital. While she did try to beat severe nausea with food hypnotherapy, SELF reports, the duchess also resorted to a plant-forward diet of avocados, berries, and oatmeal. It reportedly helped soothe her morning sickness, and the healthy staples have since become part of Middleton's daily routine.
She incorporates raw food into her diet.
The Daily Mail reports that Middleton turns to raw foods to keep her diet balanced. One of her personal favorites is ceviche—a blend of raw fish marinated in fresh citrus and spices. Other go-to raw foods include tabbouleh, watermelon salad, goji berries, gazpacho, and almond milk. Raw foods have been predicted as one of the top diet trends of 2018—largely due to the fact that some experts believe cooking destroys enzymes and essential nutrients within superfoods.
She believes in occasional treats for the whole family.
But sticks to a surprisingly strict diet.
The entire world watched with bated breath as Prince William walked Middleton down the aisle in 2011—and everyone couldn't help but notice how toned the bride was. That's because Middleton has been known to use the Dukan Diet—a program also reportedly a favorite for superstar Jennifer Lopez and fashion legend Gisele Bündchen—to increase protein intake and ditch unhealthy carbs. Nutritionists commend the 4-step program for using lean proteins, veggies, fruit, and whole wheat to promote weight loss without counting carbohydrates.
Like the rest of us, she believes in tried-and-true recipes.
Middleton relies on trusted recipes just like many other home cooks. According to Delish, she even turns to family recipes to make treats for the Queen herself. In 2011, Kate whipped up a batch of her grandmother's chutney as a gift for her grandmother-in-law. She later revealed in an interview that the Queen loved the gift so much, it was on the breakfast table the following morning.
