An ode to the avocado.
If you found yourself, along with the other 103 million Americans, tuning in to the 52nd Super Bowl, you probably watched—and picked your favorite commercial. Most years the food commercials are for fare we're not so interested in—salty chips, sugary soda and candy... not exactly our bag.
But this year something piqued our interest: The perfectly hilarious Avocados from Mexico commercial truly hit home.
The commercial depicts a group of people in “Guac World”, an enclosed dome designed to “seal the bad out and the good in.” The citizens are surrounded by lovely things: babbling brooks, calm trees, classical music, massages, and of course film and television star Chris Elliot. I’d love to snag myself an invite to live there too.
But everything is about to change. A woman acknowledges the crates full of avocados, as any haven of ours would include. Suddenly, a man in the crowd realizes they accidently left the chips outside of the enclosed dome. Panic ensues.
The scene quickly turns into a parody of The Purge. A man rips his sleeves off, another shaves his hair with an electric razor, and others run around in a frenzy, smearing “help” in dirt on the translucent dome. What is a world full of avocados without any chips?!?!
The leader of the group finally calms the crowd by saying, “Wait! Avocados taste good on lots of things. See? Avocado toast! We can still make this work.”
Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. Especially those of us digging into our plateful of chips and guac on the other side of the screen anxiously waiting to see what happens. Peace and happiness have now settled among the chipless, distraught people of Guac World.
She stands next to a table beautifully displaying avocado toast, burgers topped with avocados, sandwiches with avocado spread, and sliced avocado-topped salads. It’s an avocado lovers paradise. It’s everything I would ever want in the world. Avocados equal happiness, obviously.
The commercial closes with a citizen realizing the wifi is down inside the dome. Panic arises again.
