The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a Cyclospora contamination and recall alert for salads and wraps produced by Caito Foods LLC—which makes salads and wraps packaged under different brand names, including Garden Highway, Trader Joe's, Good & Delish, and Boar's Head. There are over two dozen contaminated products, including the beef, pork, and poultry salads, as well as various wraps produced between July 15 to July 18, 2018. They have “Best By,” “Enjoy By,” and “Sell By” dates ranging from July 18 to July 23.

Cyclospora often occurs after bacteria from human feces makes its way into food or water. Caito Foods LLC discovered the problem when they received a notification from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, saying the lettuce may be tainted.

This news comes on the heels of a massive cyclospora outbreak linked to salads from McDonald's. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are now 286 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclospora reported by people who ate salads from the fast-food chain.

This isn’t the first time Caito Foods LLC has been in the spotlight for contaminated foods. The food company was reportedly responsible for a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon that sickened over 70 people.

If you believe you have purchased a salad or wrap that could be contaminated, FSIS urges you not to eat it, and to throw it away or return it to wherever you purchased it. If you have already eaten one of these items, contact your healthcare provider.

Cyclospora can take anywhere from two days to two weeks to incubate, so pay attention to any unusual symptoms such as “watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements,” according to the CDC. Other symptoms include crippling abdominal cramps, severe nausea, and loss of appetite.
