Colorado has 53 peaks higher than 14,000 feet; Pikes Peak is the most famous. To venture to the top, head for Barr Trail in Manitou Springs, which leads the adventurous hiker up 13 miles to the summit. On clear days, you can see as far as New Mexico and Kansas.

Somehow, the stunning natural scenery that surrounds the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (719-633-9925) makes its 750 animals seem even more at home in their environments. The zoo is home to the world's most successful giraffe-breeding program (185 births since 1954).
