The sun is blazing, the price of just about everything seems to be skyrocketing, I really need a haircut, and – what’s this? A glass of fresh, cold lemonade? (Sip). Well this is (sip)… you know (sip, sip)..(slurp) this is great.

August 20 is National Lemonade Day. Huzzah!

Fresh lemonade is a delightful, affordable, Vitamin C-packed treat that carries the added bonus of nostalgia in every glass. Some sunny alchemy happens when you stir up a batch: a few lemons, some sugar, and some water become a smile-inducing tonic. It is a simple happiness in a complicated world.

When is the last time you treated yourself to homemade lemonade? It’s fun to have a National Lemonade Day – but you don’t need to wait.

Lemonade for One
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about one lemon)
2 tablespoons sugar
¾-cup cold water

Combine the lemon juice and sugar in a tall glass; stir until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the water. Add ice. Start smiling.

For a little variation, muddle a few mint leaves with the sugar and lemon juice, or substitute 1 tablespoon of lime juice for 1 tablespoon of lemon. If you’re feeling really adventurous, stir up some Lavender Lemonade or our crowd pleasing Basil-infused Watermelon Lemonade .

Like an extra kick in your lemonade?  Avoid the pre-made “hard” varieties (and the skunk flavoring that seems to come free with every bottle) and mix up your own. Try topping off your fresh lemonade with chilled champagne for a knockout sipper, or mix in sparkling water and white rum to taste, or stir together 1 part ice-cold lemonade with 1 part lager for a classic British Shandy.
