Hooray for a national grocery chain that’s taking a stand on sustainability!  Whole Foods Market has announced that starting this Earth Day, April 22, they will no longer sell any red-coded (non-sustainable) wild-caught seafood in any of their stores—no more seafood plucked from overfished waters or harvested through ecologically-damaging methods. (Farmed seafood at the retailer is monitored under a separate set of quality standards.) They’re working hand-in-hand with Monterey Bay Aquarium, Blue Ocean Institute, and The Marine Stewardship Council on this initiative that makes the murky waters of sustainability a bit clearer and easier for the consumer. When you go to shop for dinner, it can be as easy as buying what suits your fancy—no need to do research or even consult your sustainability app. If your old favorite is no longer available, just ask the folks at the fish counter for their next-best recommendation. This is a big step from a major retailer that will hopefully cause others to follow suit.
