5 Healthier Halloween Snacks You Can Buy at Target
Kids—and parents—will love these nutritionist-approved picks.
Halloween is right around the corner and—if you’re like some of us busy and tired parents—it’s likely that you’re scrounging for a few last-minute items to pass out. Because there’s just not enough time left to make a multi-store trip for that trick-or-treat basket, we honed in on a tried-and-true favorite: Target!
After wandering the aisles at Target (ok, I’ll be honest, I spent nearly 2 hours sitting on the floor comparing products to bring you this list) to find healthier, non-chocolate goodies (because c’mon, let’s not debate the nutritional differences between Snickers, Twix, Milkway, M&Ms, etc.), here’s what I recommend:
Ghosts + Bats Veggie Chips
These super cute “vegetable and potato” chips are pressed into ghost and bat shapes—a festive step-up from the everyday school snack veggie chips. We chose them over snack-sized pretzel bags because they’re at least nearly 100 milligrams lower in sodium than some brands. Another bonus: they’re gluten-free, for those gluten-sensitive guests.
Welch’s Mixed Fruit Fruit Snacks
These 1/2-ounce mini bags come filled with ghost, bat, and pumpkin-shaped chews. Not only is their first ingredient a fruit puree (not common!), but compared to other major brands, these are among the lowest in sugar.
Chewy Halloween Minis
Decorated with orange sprinkles, these mini chocolate chip-dotted granola bars from Quaker are comparable in size to a mid-size candy bar, but are made with a whole grain (thank you, oats!).
Annie’s Halloween Bunny Grahams
These honey and chocolate bunnies are slightly sweet, but not over the top. They’re made with that expected whole-grain goodness found in many of Annie’s products (the first ingredient is whole grain wheat flour), and if synthetic food dyes are a concern for you, there aren’t any here.
Wholesome Organic Lollipops
These ghost- and skull-shaped suckers hit all the “free from” notes—gluten-free, no synthetic colors, peanut and tree nut free, and non-GMO verified. Plus, they’re organic and fair trade certified. But the main reason they win for us—they’re cute, the kids still love them, and they pacify the parents that support all of those good-for-the-earth causes.
