Don’t Miss Out: The Weight of the Nation
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have teamed up with HBO to produce a four-part documentary series called "The Weight of the Nation," which outlines the scope of our nation’s obesity problem, some common myths, and the costs that we have accrued… and will continue to accrue if we don’t take immediate action.
The Weight of the Nation is a multipronged project, designed to shed light on both the facts and myths of one of our most urgent public health issues. The project kicked off earlier this week with a government-led conference in Washington D.C. and a report released by the Institutes of Medicine. It’s quite the report, a lengthy 450+ pages, in which the IOM has evaluated previous obesity prevention strategies and has identified recommendations to help accelerate progress.
But to really catch the attention of our media-hungry nation, the team has joined with HBO to produce a two-part documentary examining the obesity epidemic through case studies and interviews with families struggling with obesity, as well as leading national experts. Tune In: The documentary is scheduled to air this coming Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th.
The films are the centerpiece of a public awareness campaign, which also includes a three-part HBO Family series for kids, 12 short films, a website and social media, and a nationwide community-based outreach effort.
