Plain popcorn doesn't *always* mean that it lacks flavor.
Plain popcorn is a healthy snack because you get a lot of it for relatively few calories, and it packs whole grains and fiber to keep you satiated. Plain varieties (unlike the stuff you find at movie theaters) are usually low in fat, too.
But finding a good one isn't necessarily simple. Without much to hide behind, the slightest undesirable texture or stale flavor jumps right out—especially when it comes pre-popped in a bag.
Chris Michel and I tried several plain, pre-popped, bagged popcorns to see which one had the best “classic” popcorn taste—we wanted our popcorn to be pillow-soft, with just a little crunch at the end, and finish with just enough salt to make it flavorful. Plus, it had to meet Cooking Light’s nutrition standards.
Chris liked Smartfood’s sea salt flavor which was nice and airy, without too much of the shell that can get stuck in your teeth. It had a crisp flavor and just enough salt to keep it tasty. Each generous 3 1/4 cup serving has 140 calories, plus 7g of fat, 1g of sat fat, 30mg of sodium, 5g of carbs, 4g fiber, and 3g of protein.
I personally liked Angie’s Boom Chicka Pop sea salt popcorn. I thought it tasted the most like the popcorn you’d find at a movie theater (if there was way less oil/butter!) I also loved that it had great crunch and didn’t get stuck in your teeth (a small detail that makes a big difference during snack time.)

Things we both loved about both brands: You get a ton of popcorn in a serving, and the nutrition is solid, so either one of these would make a great snack to munch in front of the TV. Try them and let us know what you think!
