Spoiler: They were all delicious! But I have a clear favorite.

Welcome to Air Fryer Month! Throughout September, our team will be sharing healthy air-fryer recipes and tips and tricks to help you get meals on the table in less time with fewer dishes, courtesy of everyone's favorite appliance. Visit us weekly for the latest Air Fryer Month content.

That addictive crunch from fried food is hard to imitate when you’re trying to make healthier choices. But thanks to the air fryer, we can satisfy our fried food cravings with minimal to no added oil and much less cleanup than traditional frying.

I have a rule that if I’m craving something for over three days in a row, then I need to satisfy the urge. And a lot of my most crave-worthy foods can be found in the frozen section of Trader Joe’s. So I decided to load up my cart with frozen foods and see which ones lend themselves best to everyone’s favorite appliance: the air fryer.

1. Hashbrown Patties

Calories per serving: 130
Serving size: 1 patty
Temperature: 400
Time: 8 to 10 minutes

Throwing these in the air fryer makes for a quick addition to breakfast for the whole family. But don’t stop at breakfast: They’ve also become my favorite gluten-free avocado “toast” vessel. I like to slather them with avocado and top with a runny egg and chili flakes. I’ve tried these in the toaster oven and they do not compare to air-fried patties. Give it a try!

Calories per serving: 200
Serving size: 2 pieces
Temperature: 370
Time: 10 to 12 minutes

Next time you think about getting takeout, consider venturing to the freezer section at Trader Joe’s. While a bit higher in calories than other snacks on this list, these make a great (and vegan!) alternative to the deep-fried variety from your local Chinese or Thai restaurant. Check out that crispy skin.

3. Cauliflower Gnocchi

Calories per serving: 140
Serving size: 1 cup
Temperature: 400
Time: 10 to 12 minutes

For optimal crispiness, I recommend thawing these in the microwave in a single layer for 60 seconds before adding them to the air fryer. Once they’re “fried,” toss with your favorite pasta sauce and enjoy. These air-fried cauliflower gnocchi are less mushy than the pan-fried or boiled preparations, which van verge on gummy.

4. Black Bean and Cheese Taquitos

Calories: 190
Serving size: 2 taquitos
Temp: 370
Time: 10 to 12 minutes

These are a fun vegetarian option to beat those mystery meat taquitos I ate after school as a kid. As for dipping sauce, we have forgotten sour cream in my house after discovering how much better non-fat Greek yogurt is in its place. These are great to keep in the freezer for when a Taco Bell craving hits.

5. Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings

Calories: 200
Serving size: 3 wings
Temperature: 370
Time: 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway through

Wings are a constant craving in my household. Our favorites are usually battered, deep-fried, then doused in a butter-based hot sauce. The Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings from Trader Joe’s are certainly not low-calorie, but they are a bit lighter than your local sports bar wings. I have tried these in the oven and got pretty lackluster results. Throwing them in the air fryer is the only way to get that crispy exterior and juicy inside.

6. Spanakopita

Calories: 170
Serving size: 3 pieces
Temperature: 375
Time: 8 to 10 minutes

I saved the best for last: The spanakopita at Trader Joe’s is surprisingly low in calories and fat. You can enjoy three pieces for just 170 calories! It’s the perfect nosh for Greek nights, a midday snack, or an appetizer at your next party. My favorite way of enjoying these is with our 15-Minute Chicken Shawarma Bowls.
