We hear a lot about being thankful this time of year, and one thing I really am appreciative of this year is this Romaine heart.  Now Romaine, in general, is something to be thankful for due to it’s unassailable position as the world’s finest delivery system for creamy salad dressings, but I like this one in particular because it looks cool all corkscrewed up and so forth.  And I appreciate it even more since I bought it at a big ol’ grocery store.  No, not some cute little produce stand, but the grocery store.  The one that sells unerringly consistent products like Doritos, NutterButters, Cascade, etc., and the same one who picks it’s produce based on transportation and shelf-life concerns over such factors as ripeness and flavor.

So in this age of genetically-modified, hybridized foodstuff-commodities, it makes me smile that Mother Nature, or the Romaine God, or whoever is still holding out against commercial concerns and producing the occasional unique, cool-looking Romaine despite financially-motivated efforts to promote sameness in our produce aisles nationwide.
