Warmer Weather Treats: Frozen Yogurt Dots
When warmer weather starts peeking out, it’s all I can do to resist the temptation of diving into a big bowl of creamy chocolate chip ice cream. When an ice cream craving hits, there’s really nothing quite as satisfying as a spoonful of your favorite flavor. Over the past couple of months, however, I’ve seen frozen yogurt dots pop up all over the web. So, with the arrival of spring, my love for ice cream, and my desire to make my favorite dishes healthier, I thought I’d give them a try. Not only did I try them out, I took it a step further by making my own flavored yogurt first with natural ingredients.
Here, you’ll find out how to flavor your own Greek yogurt with natural flavorings and no added sugars, pipe them into dots, and freeze them to make a healthy snack or dessert. Though the texture is very different than ice cream, it yields a creamy, frozen treat that’s delicate and refreshing. These are so fun! You can serve them alone or mix your favorite flavors together! Just make sure to eat these up quick—they melt fast.
I flavored the yogurt in two different ways, so I’m going to show you both. You’ll notice the color of yogurt changes throughout—that’s just different flavorings showing the different steps, but it is all the same no matter which flavor you choose.
Recipe: Fruity Fro-Yo Dots
- ½ cup freeze dried fruit
- ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons PB2
- ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt
- 2 pieces of dark chocolate (I used Ghirardelli)
- ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt
Step 2 (Food Processor Version): Add in Greek yogurt and pulse until creamy and blended together.
Step 1 (Blender Version): Place freeze dried berries, or chocolate in a blender. I used an individual-sized blender cup to get faster results, with quicker cleanup. Pulse for about 5-10 seconds.
Step 2: Here is where all the steps sync—take the freeze dried fruit powder, PB2, or chocolate pieces, place into individual bowls, and mix each ingredient with ½ cup of Greek yogurt. I loved the yogurt even before frozen. It’s so delicious and a fun alternative to store-bought flavored yogurts.
Step 3: Place a small plastic bag, or piping bag in a cup. Then, put each mixture in separate bags, and snip the corner.
Step 4: Make a row of dots with the yogurt on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
Step 5: Remove from the freezer, scoop up with a spatula, and serve. You can serve them alone or mix your favorite flavors together!
