Our Nutritionist Picks the 6 Must-Buy Whole Foods' Items After Monday's Price Drop
Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods Market will be finalized Monday, August 28—and this means immediate price drops on a selection of the mega-retailer’s best-selling grocery staples. Included on this list are organic bananas, avocados, apples, greens, fish, ground beef, and nut butters.
While other major grocers may offer more affordable produce, the quality of Whole Foods Market has traditionally nudged certain consumers to pay a higher price, especially for organic items. With price drops on the horizon, here are the organic products you should purchase at Whole Foods after Monday.
Organic Apples
Apples are repeated offenders on The Environmental Working Group’s annual list of the Dirty Dozen. This year, more than 98 percent of apple samples (among other fruit) tested positive for residue of at least one pesticide. Organic apples have fewer pesticides and are one of the produce items recommended to purchase organic. Starting Monday, both Gala (in season now) and Fuji (in season starting October) apples will undergo price drops at Whole Foods and are worth seeking out.
Organic Avocados
If you've shopped around for avocados you know how outrageous the prices can be.
Avocados are one the cleanest fruits (only 1 percent of samples showed any detectable pesticides in 2017), thanks to their thick peel that protects the flesh from absorbing agricultural chemicals. Although it's not necessary to buy organic avocados, some shoppers may notice improved quality and exceptional richness with the organic variety. If the price drops enough to match conventional avocados, go for the organic variety and see if you can taste the difference.
Organic Large Brown Eggs
Eggs are certified organic if they are from hens that receive only organic feed and live in a cage-free environment. They must also meet all standards set by the USDA National Organic Program. Whole Food’s Organic Large Brown Eggs are Grade A (meaning they have been evaluated for shell shape and consistency, as well as internal quality) and typically free of stains on the shell and blemishes on the yolk. Quality eggs = quality taste.
Organic Greens
Another produce item recommended to purchase organic to reduce pesticide residue is salad greens. Look forward to price drops on both organic baby lettuce and kale on Monday, which means you have no excuse to not try one of our delicious kale recipes for dinner next week. Kale is high in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as a good source of fiber.
Almond Butter
Whether you’re #TeamCrunchy or #TeamCreamy, Whole Foods is cutting the price on both of their 365 organic almond butters. The ingredient list is kept simple (dry roasted almonds), unlike some other brands that sneak palm oil or added sugar into their nut butters. Almond butter contains a significant amount of heart-healthy vitamin E, bone-supporting calcium, magnesium, and potassium, all packed into a two tablespoon serving.
Organic Rotisserie Chicken
Sure, you can pick up a pre-roasted bird at most local supermarkets, but Whole Food’s Organic Rotisserie Chickens are vegetarian fed, antibiotic and hormone free, and free of artificial colors or preservatives, making for a juicier, more plump bird that is sustainably raised. We like to think of rotisserie chickens as one of the best supermarket allies for quick, weeknight meals.
