Skip the coffee house and make a memorable tea drink at home this winter. Turmeric, which has received big press for its uses as a Functional Food, adds nuanced flavor to the traditional chai latte. The key to making delicious tea is to avoid over-steeping, so watch your timer as you make this warming drink recipe. Don't skip the honey; the chai tea needs a little sweetness to bring out the full flavor of the spices. This recipe serves four, so cut it down if you're drinking a cup by yourself in the afternoon.


  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon chopped peeled fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cardamom pods
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 orange pekoe tea bags
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cups steamed whole milk
  • Ground turmeric (optional)

How to Make It

  1. Bring water, chopped turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon stick to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add tea bags; let stand 10 minutes. Pour through a fine-mesh strainer into a bowl; discard solids. Stir in honey.

  2. Pour steamed milk evenly into 4 glasses. Pour 1/4 cup tea mixture into each glass. Sprinkle with ground turmeric, if desired.
