Orange Sugar

Photo: Randy Mayor
Yield

12 (serving size: about 1 teaspoon)

The flavors of these sugars are concentrated, so you only need to use a little to pack quite a punch. They're great for rimming cocktail glasses (think of this as a way to fun-up mocktails at a baby shower, too), sprinkling over oatmeal or yogurt, or decorating cookies and quick breads. Check out the how-to video to see how they’re made.

Ingredients

  • 2 navel oranges
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

How to Make It

  1. Using a serrated peeler, peel rind off oranges, avoiding all white pith. Arrange rind in a single layer on a double layer of paper towels; top with an additional paper towel. Microwave at HIGH for 1 to 2 minutes or until completely dry and crisp, checking every 30 seconds (watch closely for burning). Cool completely.
  2. Place rind in a coffee or spice grinder; process until ground. Add sugar; process until very finely ground.
