The upward trend of America's weight is continuing, according to recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control. The average weight of Americans has ballooned by 15 pounds in the last 20 years.

The American battle against obesity continues. Recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that the average American now weighs 15 pounds more than they did two decades ago, but we are staying the same height. What does that mean? We're getting rounder.

The statistics were drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2011 to 2014 and found its data through interviews and physical exams. The official numbers are that the average American male is 5 ft. 9 in. and weighs 197.5 pounds, while the average American female is almost 5 ft. 4 in. and weighs 168.5 pounds.

The CDC gave no theory behind this weight increase, but it's part of the continuing trend of high obesity rates in America. Some contributing factors might include the increasing amount of sedentary office jobs that require sitting for hours (but can be counteracted with exercise), the high amount of processed food in the average American diet, or a lack of nutritional literacy when it comes to understanding food labels.
