Open Your Eyes

For wider and brighter eyes, try this advice from Gina Veltri, a makeup artist in Beverly Hills.

1. Pick a deeply pigmented eye shadow, and use a flat brush to line the top of the lid, then―using what's still left on the brush―line three-fourths of the lower lid from the outside in. Use a brown or copper shade if your skin tone is warm; try charcoal, deep blue, or purple if it's cool.

2. Next, to instantly brighten your eyes, apply a light shade of eye shadow (whitish for pale skin, light yellow for darker skin) with a hint of shimmer to the inside corners of your eyelids.

3. Before applying mascara, give your lashes a quick crimp with an eyelash curler. "Curling the lashes opens the eyes completely, and makes anyone look more awake," Veltri says. She likes Shu Uemura's easy-to-use curler ($19).

4. Finally, apply mascara. Hold the wand parallel to your nose, and swipe it back and forth across the lashes using a windshield-wiper motion to coat each lash from base to tip. Immediately brush lashes in an upward motion, holding the wand perpendicular to your nose, to separate your lashes and prevent them from clumping.

Because bacteria can grow on the wand, make sure not to share your mascara with anyone, and discard mascara after three months.
