A Kid in the Kitchen: Matisse Spices Up Dinner

Photo: Johnny Autry
Our kid in the kitchen massages chicken and creates a new family fave.

To test one of our kid-friendly recipes, we contacted Matisse Reid, an 11-year-old foodie who loves to cook for her family and friends. This month, she received rave reviews for a flavorful spice rub applied to chicken. Here's her report. —Phoebe Wu

"This month I tested a rub. I enjoyed measuring and combining all the ingredients. I made a double batch because we also had ribs in the fridge and Mom needed a rub for them, too. Instead of sprinkling the spices over the chicken, I placed the rub, oil, garlic, and chicken in a large zip-top bag and massaged the chicken through the bag (this was fun!). I cooked this on the outdoor grill instead of in a grill pan. The rub was delicious on both the ribs and the chicken. I found it a bit spicy, which is surprising for me, but I thought the flavor was good and liked the garlic in it. My mom, dad, brother, and sister loved it, and Mom wants me to make more to keep on hand for barbecues."

  • Kalani (age 14): My brother really liked it! 10 out of 10
  • Matisse: It was a little spicy for me (and my younger brother), but overall, it was very good. 8 out of 10
