Follow this general timeline of when to introduce new foods to your baby. Remember to consult your child’s pediatrician with any questions about feeding your baby.*
0 to 4 months:
- Breast milk or formula
4 to 6 months
Begin to add:
- Single-grain cereals (rice, oat, and barley)
- Single-vegetable purees
- Single-fruit purees
6 to 8 months
Continue to add:
- Single-grain cereals (rice, oat, and barley)
- Single-vegetable purees
- Single-fruit purees
Then add:
- Mixed grain-and-vegetable purees
- Mixed grain-and-fruit purees
- Simple fruit-and-vegetable combinations
8 to 12 months
Add:
- Chunkier purees
- Proteins (meat, poultry, fish, and tofu purees; cheese; and yogurt)
- Very soft finger foods
1 year
Add:
- Eggs
- Whole cow’s milk
- Finger foods
- Mixed dishes cut into small pieces and served with a spoon
Wean:
- Formula
- Baby purees
