Brushing 101

Five tips for a brighter smile

Brushing correctly fosters healthy teeth and gums, and fends off discoloration. Jennifer Salzer, D.D.S., a dentist in New York City, explains the best way to do it.

1. Always remember to floss your teeth before brushing. Slide the floss around each tooth.

2. Brush twice daily and after meals if you can for at least two minutes, which is about the length of a song on the radio. (The average American brushes a paltry 22 seconds.)

3. Whether you use a manual or powered toothbrush, angle it about 45 degrees toward the gum line, so you clean both the teeth and gums. Plaque tends to build up at their meeting point.

4. Brush in a circular motion over one tooth at a time so you're sure not to miss any spots.

5. Use a gentle hand. Pressing too hard damages gums and wears away the enamel, and it doesn't make your teeth any whiter.
