Know your nutrition facts about the sweet stuff.

• Two sugars that occur naturally in many fruits and honey are glucose and fructose.
• The scientific name for granulated table sugar is sucrose.
• Each sucrose molecule is made up of one glucose and one fructose molecule joined together.
• Most of the sugar in the world is derived from either sugar cane or sugar beets.
• Sugars are carbohydrates—they contain no fat or protein.
• Because of variations in processing, moisture level, and the size of the grains, the same amount of different sugars contains different caloric values.
• One teaspoon of granulated sugar contains about 15 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 4.2 grams of carbohydrates.
• One teaspoon of brown sugar ¬contains about 17 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 4.5 grams of carbohydrates.
• One teaspoon of powdered sugar contains about 10 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 2.5 grams of carbohydrates.
• One teaspoon of turbinado sugar contains 10 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 3 grams of carbohydrates.
