Simple sauces and customized ice creams give you options galore for sweet summer treats. While ice cream au naturel--naked, in a cup or a cone--is the purest experience, sometimes you want to dress it up in its sundae best. When you think sundae, you probably think hot fudge. That’s a good thought; hot fudge is one of our favorites. But sundae options abound. And you can diversify dessert at home without the heavy wooden bucket, the messy rock salt, or (shudder) the cranking. For most of our countdown recipes, simply choose your favorite light commercial ice creams and stir-in easy sauces and toppings. The result: premium varieties at plain vanilla prices. You won’t find most of these flavor combinations in your supermarket--but if you do, we bet they aren’t light. Here’s everything you could possibly need for 31 days of bliss--custom-made, low-fat ice creams; easy, flavorful sauces; and suggestions for putting them together.
