Beauty Myth
Myth: The Sun Clears Up Acne
Reality: The sun can trigger breakouts. Cumulative sun exposure breaks down skin's collagen and elastin, making pores more rigid. Rigid pores, in turn, are more likely to clog with oil and dead skin cells. And, in the short term, a sunburn makes dead skin cells more leathery, which also clogs pores, says Lisa Donofrio, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. If you see a temporary improvement after sun exposure, here's why: Ultraviolet light decreases the skin's immune response, which decreases inflammation -- a contributor to acne. However, lowering skin's immunity is not a healthy option since it makes you more vulnerable to skin cancer.
