Another Plus of Keeping Your Cool
Stress may be a given in your life, but how you handle it can make a difference in your health -- including your risk of stroke, according to a recent study at the University of Pittsburgh. In a study of 254 healthy postmenopausal women, researchers found that those whose blood pressure rose in response to stress had a greater risk of stroke. So coping better with stress, says lead researcher and professor of epidemiology Karen Matthews, Ph.D., may conversely lower your risk.

Beauty Myth
Myth: The Sun Clears Up Acne Reality: The sun can trigger breakouts. Cumulative sun exposure breaks down skin's collagen and elastin, making pores more rigid. Rigid pores, in turn, are more likely to clog with oil and dead skin cells. And, in the short term, a sunburn makes dead skin cells more leathery, which also clogs pores, says Lisa Donofrio, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. If you see a temporary improvement after sun exposure, here's why: Ultraviolet light decreases the skin's immune response, which decreases inflammation -- a contributor to acne. However, lowering skin's immunity is not a healthy option since it makes you more vulnerable to skin cancer. >>

Fast Fix
When your lipstick snaps off at the base, find an old pill case or any small plastic container with a lid and make a new home for it, says Manhattan makeup artist Laura Geller. Just scoop the broken stick into the well and heat in the microwave for about 50 seconds (make sure the container is microwave safe first). Melting the lip color allows it to mold neatly to the container as it cools. Apply with a brush or finger.
