Walking for exercise continues to grow in popularity. This might explain why an increasing number of athletic shoe manufacturers are focusing more on creating comfortable footwear specifically for walkers. All of the shoes below are available in various widths, so you're sure to find the right fit. Here's what to keep in mind if your feet are . . .

Hard-to-Fit
Look for durable, soft shoes. One to try: Asics GEL-Kayano Walker V ($90; 800-678-9435, www.asicsamerica.com) The Kayano contains a flexible panel surrounding the foot that accommodates a wide variety of shapes. It also has additional support built in to prevent your foot from rolling too far inward—a biomechanical issue called over-pronation, which can cause ankle or knee pain.

In Need of Extra Cushioning
Seek out shoes that are designed to accommodate prescription orthotics or over-the-counter shoe inserts. One to try: Saucony Grid Omni Walker ($90; 800-365-4933, www.saucony.com) The Omni Walker has a durable rubber outsole and a softer forefoot for added traction and cushioning.

New to the Activity
You'll want proper support and flexibility. One to try: New Balance 843 ($105; 800-253-7463, www.newbalance.com) A thin piece of graphite is embedded into the sole for additional support. The laces run through flexible loops of material allowing for a snug, custom fit over the arch.
