Treat Your Knees Right
Tips to avoid problems with pain or injury later.
 Easy on the Knees
 Knee-friendly Fitness Plan

The less stress you place on your knees now, the higher the likelihood that you'll be able to avoid problems. Use these tips to treat your knees with TLC.

Fix your feet. Many foot problems, such as low arches (flat feet), or feet that roll in (pronate) when you walk or run, can place pressure on the knees. You can find relief with orthotics, supports that you place in your shoes (they're available at drugstores), or athletic shoes with proper cushioning.

Test new moves. If you're prone to problems, certain activities may irritate your knees. To learn which sports are best for you, Nicholas DiNubile, M.D., suggests sticking with one for a few days to see how it feels. Always ask your doctor which activities he or she feels you can try.

Maintain a healthy weight. Because your knees support the bulk of your body weight, every extra pound has the impact of five on your knees. Be sure to eat healthfully and exercise. Your knees will return the favor by helping your legs propel you during activities.
