More people join gyms in January than any other month, according to the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA). If this includes you, check out our insider's tips for getting the best deal with the most perks.
1. Take advantage of the two popular times per year when gyms actively recruit new members--January and May--and save. At the start of the year, many health clubs lure people who resolve to get in shape with waived initiation fees and other deals, says Dave Reiseman, spokesperson for Gold's Gym International in Venice, California. In spring, gyms make similar offers to offset summer's slower months.
2. Be ready to join on the spot if you like what you see. Signing up during your first visit could snag you incentives like a free month on your membership, says Joann Bally, author of 101 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Health Club Membership.
3. If you take classes, beware of hidden costs. "Most classes should be included in the price of your membership," Reiseman says. Still, many gyms charge for popular classes or those that require more equipment, such as indoor cycling or pilates. Add up the extra fees for a weekly class, and a pricier gym that's all-inclusive may be a better deal.
4. Ask if the club belongs to a nationwide network. If so, you may be able to visit out-of-town affiliates when traveling. However, be sure to ask about policy restrictions. Some may allow you to visit only those gyms a specific distance form your home club, while others may limit the number of times--or hours--you can visit.
