Got a skin problem? Chances are, there's a mask out there designed to
address it. Hundreds of face masks promise benefits from antiaging and refreshing
tired skin to hydrating and fighting acne. To help you find the best mask, we
asked Audrey Kunin, M.D., a dermatologist in Kansas City, Missouri, and founder
of DermaDoctor.com, for tips and recommendations.
Antiaging
Look for: Alpha hydroxy acids (ahas), the most popular of which is glycolic
acid. Beta hydroxy acids (bhas), such as salicylic acid, diminish fine lines
and skin discolorations. Kunin's pick: M.D. Forte Skin Rejuvenation Hydra-Masque
($24.50)
Refreshing
Look for: Soothing ingredients, such as chamomile, comfort tired-looking skin;
fruit and vegetable extracts, such as papaya and cucumber, alleviate puffiness
and redness. Kunin's picks: Neova Gentle Purifying Mask ($24); Peter Thomas
Roth Cucumber Gel Masque ($40)
Hydrating
Look for: Water, a high concentration of moisturizers, and exfoliants. Kunin's
picks: Z. Bigatti Restoration Dew Hydrating Facial Mask ($98), ahava Mud Masque
for Normal to Dry Skin ($33.60)
Antiacne/Oiliness
Look for: Clay-based products, particularly those with kaolin and bentonite,
draw out dirt. If you have sensitive skin, look for less-drying silica instead.
Sulfur helps kill bacteria on the skin's surface. Kunin's picks: Cellex-C Betaplex
Clear Complexion Mask ($39), Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Masque ($40)
