Flavor description
A deeply ridged, yellow fruit that grows in tropical climates. Sometimes referred to as star fruit because when it’s cut in half crosswise, it has a five point star shape. Flavor ranges from sweet to tart. Vibrant yellow when ripe. Choose a fruit that is firm, has glossy skin, and emits a floral-fruity aroma.

How to use
Preparing this fruit is simple: Just wash it. The thin skin doesn’t need peeling and doesn’t interfere with the juicy, crisp flesh; the occasional seed is soft and flavorless. Carambolas are rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber and can be eaten whole like an apple. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

How to find
Available in large supermarkets with the exotic fruits in the produce section. Grown commercially in Florida, carambolas are in season from September to March.
