Flavor description
Related to ginger, tumeric root gives food a golden color and a slightly pungent flavor. In Thai cuisine, turmeric root is grated or pounded to release its color and aroma. Since raw turmeric is not widely available in the United States, we've used the ground variety.

How to find
Turmeric can be found in the spices aisle of your local supermarket. Or, buy online at www.spicehunter.com or www.ChefShop.com.

How to use
Turmeric is used in mustard and relish for color and flavor; it’s sometimes used instead of saffron.

Substitutes
Saffron
