The winner have been announced for the third annual Cooking Light Ultimate Reader Recipe Contest. Here's how to win the fourth.
Howard L. Puckett
Oatmeal Knots
by Lauri Short

A team of Cooking Light Test Kitchens professionals and food editors culled more than 3,000 entries to select the finalists' recipes for testing. Here are tips to help you develop a dish that will make it through the first round this year:

• Read and follow the contest rules and instructions thoroughly.
• Reference other Cooking Light recipes in the magazine and at MyRecipes.com. Be familiar with the heart-healthy oils and nuts, lower-sodium options, and straightforward cooking techniques used in our recipes. Submitted recipes that call for excessive amounts of high-fat and high-sodium ingredients are immediately eliminated.
• Keep it simple. Employing more than one sponsored product in a recipe does not improve your chances of being chosen as a finalist. Instead, focus on using flavorful ingredients in an easy preparation.
• Final checks. Prepare your recipe several times before entering. Read through it to make sure all of the ingredients are used in the procedure. Be specific about cooking times and temperatures, dish and pan sizes, and ingredient amounts. Once you've perfected your dish, ask someone else to prepare it.
• Entries for the fourth annual contest are due May 31, 2008. Visit CookingLight.com/perks to enter.
