Taste Test: The Best Boxed Brownies

Randy Mayor
We tested 12 prepared brownie mixes with 210 calories and 4.5g sat fat or less per brownie and no trans fats.

Our Favorite: Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix
$2.99 (20 ounces)
Brownies so rich and fudgy you'll have a hard time convincing anyone—even yourself—they're not made from scratch. They bake beautifully, tall and dense with a crisp top crust. They were the most intensely chocolaty of the bunch and not too sweet.

Also good: Kodiak Cakes Big Bear Brownies  $5.99
These stood out from the pack for their super-rich, decadent flavor. Bonus: They're 100% whole grain.

Our Gluten-Free Favorite: Betty Crocker Chocolate Gluten Free Brownie Mix
$4.59 (17 ounces)
You'll be shocked these brownies are gluten-free—we were. They're richly chocolaty with heavy vanilla undertones balanced by a slight saltiness. They're thinner than most brownies we tried but still pack a lot of flavor into only 150 calories per 2-inch piece.

Also good: King Arthur Flour Gluten-Free Brownie Mix $6.99
We tried these prepared with the all-oil option to keep saturated fat in check.
